External Sender Warning

Mail systems

Students Teachers Employees

To enhance the security of email communication at AMU, incoming messages from external senders automatically display a warning intended to alert users to potential risks associated with opening links and attachments.

Warning

The warning below is added automatically and serves as a reminder that the message originates from outside the AMU environment - this does not automatically mean the sender is dangerous. The warning simply helps you identify potentially harmful emails more easily, even if they appear trustworthy.

In what cases will the warning help me recognize a risky email

Fake invoice

An email requesting payment of an invoice has arrived in your mailbox. The email appears to be sent by the bursar, but the actual address is, for example, finance@amu-invoice.com (external domain). Thanks to the inserted warning, the user is alerted that the message did not come from the bursar's email but is an attacker’s attempt.

Spoofed calendar invitation

You received an invitation to a Teams meeting that appears to come from the department secretary. The address is actually, for example, meeting@amu-board.com instead of the secretary’s real address. The warning helps the user verify the legitimacy of the invitation before clicking the link and handing over login credentials to the attacker.

What to do if you're unsure about the message's trustworthiness

  • Do not open suspicious attachments or click on links.
  • Check the sender's address - does it match who you expect?
  • If in doubt, contact the Computer Centre or your faculty IT administrator, see Contact details for the IT department.
